The editors of the New Zealand Medical Journal hereby retract the article titled “Scurvy in a non–weight-bearing paediatric patient”.
Following the publication of the Journal’s earlier expression of concern, a review was undertaken regarding the consent processes associated with this case report. While there has been no dispute regarding the clinical accuracy, scientific integrity or educational value of the article, concerns remained regarding whether consent for publication met the standards required by the New Zealand Medical Journal and accepted ethical principles for medical publication.
After consideration of the information available, and following discussion with the authors, the Journal has determined that retraction of the article is appropriate. This decision has been made on ethical grounds relating to consent and patient confidentiality, rather than because of concerns regarding the validity of the clinical content itself.
In accordance with standard publishing practice, the article will remain part of the permanent publication record; however, the text of the manuscript has been withdrawn and replaced by this retraction notice.
The New Zealand Medical Journal takes issues of patient consent, confidentiality and ethical publication standards very seriously and regrets the distress caused in this matter.
